  • The history of Tetris, created in 1984

The history of Tetris, created in 1984

Tetris, one of the most iconic and influential video games in history, has a fascinating history that spans several decades and involves a range of legal and cultural developments.

    Creation
1984: Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov, a Russian computer engineer, while working at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow. Inspired by a traditional puzzle game called pentominoes, Pajitnov designed Tetris to be a simple yet challenging game where players arrange falling blocks (tetrominoes) to complete and clear horizontal lines.

    Early Popularity
1986: Tetris was ported to the IBM PC and quickly gained popularity among computer users in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

1987: The game was discovered by Robert Stein, a British software salesman, who obtained the rights to distribute Tetris in the West through his company, Andromeda Software. However, Stein did not secure all the necessary permissions, leading to legal complications.

    Licensing and Global Spread
1988: The Soviet government, recognizing the potential of Tetris, stepped in and assigned the rights to ELORG (Elektronorgtechnica), the state-owned organization responsible for foreign trade in software. ELORG began negotiating licensing agreements with various companies.

1989: The most significant breakthrough for Tetris came when Nintendo secured the rights to distribute Tetris on their new handheld console, the Game Boy. Released as a launch title, Tetris became a massive hit, helping to drive sales of the Game Boy and cementing the game’s international fame.

    Legal Battles
Late 1980s – Early 1990s: Multiple legal battles ensued over the rights to Tetris, involving several companies including Atari Games, Mirrorsoft, and Spectrum HoloByte. The disputes were eventually resolved in favor of ELORG, which retained the rights and continued to license the game globally.

    Modern Era
1996: Henk Rogers, a Dutch video game designer and entrepreneur, along with Alexey Pajitnov, founded The Tetris Company. They obtained the rights to Tetris from ELORG, ensuring more structured and cohesive management of the brand and its licenses.

2000s – Present: Tetris has been released on virtually every gaming platform imaginable, from personal computers to smartphones, and has remained popular through various iterations and adaptations. The game’s simple yet addictive mechanics have contributed to its enduring appeal.

    Cultural Impact
Tetris has had a profound impact on video game design, influencing countless puzzle games and being recognized for its significance in the history of gaming. It has been referenced in popular culture, studied for its psychological effects (such as the “Tetris Effect” where players see Tetris shapes in real life), and celebrated for its universal appeal across different demographics and generations.

Tetris remains a beloved game, continually evolving with new versions and adaptations, yet always retaining the core gameplay that made it a classic.

    1. Development and Release of Halo: Combat Evolved (2001): The original Halo game, developed by Bungie Studios and published by Microsoft, was released as a launch title for the Xbox console. It introduced players to the sci-fi universe of Halo and the iconic protagonist, Master Chief.
    2. Halo’s Success and Expansion (2001-2004): Halo: Combat Evolved received critical acclaim and became a massive success, helping to establish the Xbox as a prominent gaming platform. Bungie went on to develop two sequels, Halo 2 (2004) and Halo 3 (2007), which further expanded the game’s universe and introduced new gameplay elements.
    3. Creation of Halo Spin-offs and Expansion beyond Gaming (2004-2009): During this period, Bungie released spin-off titles such as Halo 3: ODST (2009) and Halo Wars (2009), which offered different gameplay experiences within the Halo universe. Additionally, a series of novels, comics, and other media were released, expanding the lore and story of the franchise.
    4. Bungie’s Departure and 343 Industries (2010-2012): Bungie announced their departure from Microsoft, and 343 Industries, a subsidiary of Microsoft Studios, took over the development of future Halo games. Bungie’s final Halo project was Halo: Reach (2010), a prequel to the original game.

It aims to be a spiritual reboot, returning to the franchise’s roots while introducing new gameplay mechanics and an open-world structure. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the game is still in development and set to release in late 2021.

It’s important to note that the Halo franchise also includes various multiplayer components, including the popular Halo multiplayer modes, which have been a significant part of the series’ success throughout its history.

  • Cain, the dog from Red Dead Redemption 2, passed away in real life

Cain, the dog from Red Dead Redemption 2, passed away in real life

Fans of Red Dead Redemption 2 and animal lovers across the planet will be sad to learn that the dog who portrayed Cain has passed away in real life. Cain wasn’t a huge character in Red Dead Redemption 2, but times like this is when people come together amid loss and be there for each other, especially when it’s a pup that most RD2 gamers enjoyed knowing. The dog’s real name was Einstein Barnes.

A Senior Animator over at Rockstar Games shared a heartwarming message about Einstein Barnes on Instagram. It said the following (and the rest can be read on Instagram):

Einstein was truly one of a kind. From the moment we met, we formed a deep bond, and it was clear that we were destined for countless adventures together.

You possessed an uncanny intelligence, earning you the name Einstein; even if, at times, the name felt like a joke.

You never failed to bring a smile to my face or offer solace during challenging times. Your presence alone was enough to brighten the darkest of days and lift me up in times of need. Whether it was a quiet walk to fort green, suiting up to be a stunt dog or exhilarating treks through uncharted territories, you were always ready for whatever adventure awaited us.

You were more than just a dog; you were a legend. Your intelligence and unwavering loyalty made you stand out above all other pups. You were there to comfort me when I was sad, to celebrate with me in moments of joy, and to lend a listening ear when I needed someone to confide in. I know people say dogs can’t understand but there was something about your eyes that seemed to counter the idea..

GGRecon posted a great photo from Red Dead Redemption 2, showing Cain getting some petting action from another character, hitting people right in the feels for the good boy.

  • Gaming company Electronic Arts disappoints ‘woke’ crowd, refuses to speak out on every progressive topic

Gaming company Electronic Arts disappoints ‘woke’ crowd, refuses to speak out on every progressive topic

According to Kotaku, Electronic Arts will not join other major gaming developers in openly supporting abortion & transgender rights. When asked about it at a company-wide town hall gathering on May 24, the gaming publisher said it couldn’t take a position on every public topic and that “being an inclusive company means being inclusive of all those points of view.”

The comments were made during a meeting with business leaders to discuss new EA titles, corporate strategy, wage rises, and other topics on employees’ minds.

One of the subjects discussed was abortion rights, following reports that the Supreme Court is likely to overturn the landmark 1973 abortion ruling Roe v. Wade. Another issue is trans rights, with Texas recently declaring gender-affirming healthcare for kids to be “child abuse.”

Many employees demanded that EA make public remarks in support of both abortion & trans rights, according to one person familiar with the company’s town hall yesterday.

According to a transcript of the meeting obtained by Kotaku, chief people officer Mala Singh stated that the corporation only speaks out when it will “actually have a positive impact” and that it is a “consistent perspective” among all 13,000 employees around the world, said report.

“The thing about the world today is there is a lot of division, we know this right, we see it every single day, but the thing that unites us is that we’re all here to make amazing games and experiences for our players, and that is how we have the most positive impact on the world,” Singh told. “These things are hard and they’re personal and we all have our own perspectives and sometimes we won’t speak, and that will be upsetting and I understand that, we really do.”

Following the shocking Roe v. Wade decision, some corporations, such as Microsoft, have revealed plans to help employees pay for out-of-state travel if abortion becomes illegal where they live. EA told Kotaku that it is acting on its own to provide these services through the company’s existing healthcare provider.

On May 13, Singh told employees, “We will have a benefits update to share with you soon, and please know that we are monitoring any new developments that could impact our employees.”

Singh also pushed employees to participate in the company’s donation-matching program, according to one current employee.

Much of this was sparked by the Supreme Court leak, causing protests at people’s homes, but Justice Clarence Thomas said they won’t be bullied.

Justice Clarence Thomas of the United States Supreme Court spoke out on Friday about an abortion-related issue that has overtaken the nation’s top court.

Controversy arose after Politico released a leaked draft of Justice Samuel Alito’s opinion, which indicated the court had decided to overturn Roe v. Wade. The circumstances behind the leakage are being looked into.
Just at the 11th Circuit Judicial Conference in Atlanta, Thomas spoke to judges and attorneys on the cultural and political developments he feels are hurting the judiciary’s credibility.

According to Reuters, “we are growing hooked to desiring specific results, not dealing with the ones we don’t like.” “We can’t allow ourselves to be pushed into giving you exactly what you want,” per a report.

According to the Washington Post, Thomas did not mention the leak or the ensuing intimidation of the court’s conservative justices from far-left demonstrators. Instead, he mentioned, “events from early this week,” calling them a “symptom” of a culture that is becoming increasingly intolerant.

Thomas also expressed worry that a “different mentality” among young Americans is undermining trust and respect for the law. “Recent occurrences have demonstrated this huge transformation,” Thomas remarked, adding that “it bodes badly for a free and open society.”

Chief Justice John Roberts likewise expressed his displeasure with the disclosure. After confirming the authenticity of the manuscript, Roberts called the leak “absolutely awful.”

At a court conference on Thursday, Roberts said, “If the person organizing it believes it would affect our job, that’s just silly.”

Col. Gail Curley, the Supreme Court marshal, is investigating the origin of the leak.  The identification of the tipster, who is thought to be a legal clerk, has yet to be revealed. Few persons, however, have exposure to opinion drafts, restricting the pool of possible culprits. It’s disputed if such disclosure is unlawful.

Even Nevertheless, hypotheses concerning the origins of the leakage have divided opinion. Conservatives believe the decision draft was leaked by a left-leaning legal clerk in order to cause societal turmoil and compel the court’s conservative-leaning judges to modify their votes. Others, on the other hand, claim that a conservative clerk released the opinion draft in order to prevent the court’s conservative justices from voting otherwise. According to NPR reporter Nina Totenberg, the “dominant belief” is that the leak was caused by a conservative clerk. She did not, however, present any proof to support her assertion.

  • Playstation says they’re working on competitor to Xbox Game Pass

According to an exciting new report, Sony is working on a competitive Xbox Game Pass service for the well-known PlayStation.

According to Bloomberg, individuals familiar with Sony’s plans revealed interesting info of a brand new service code titled “Spartacus,” according to Bloomberg. It will allow PlayStation fans to pay a monthly fee to access a library of new and old games. This is the same strategy that Xbox employs for its popular Game Pass subscription service.

According to the project materials, the planned service would be separated into three categories. The first contains all of the benefits of PlayStation Plus, which is required for online gaming and includes a monthly selection of free games. A higher tier, similar to Game Pass, gives you access to the whole game library, while a third tier gives you access to extended demonstrations, game streaming, and a larger selection of PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games.

Launching a new service to add older games to the library is big news, given the demand for backward compatibility among PlayStation fans.

The new service, which will unite Sony’s two subscription services PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now — a cloud service that allows users to stream games directly to their consoles — is set to arrive in spring 2022. According to Bloomberg, the PlayStation Plus name will be kept, but PlayStation Now will be phased away as a brand.

Despite overcoming competitors like Stadia, PlayStation Now has struggled to establish itself as a key PlayStation subscription service. However, in recent months, the firm has taken measures to incorporate important games such as God of War and The Last of Us 2.

  • 343 Industries Head of Creative reveals Halo Infinite multiplayer to get new weapons

Halo Infinite will be supported for a long time, according to 343 Industries. The decision to extend the game’s compatibility to the next Xbox shouldn’t be a surprise, whatever it is and whenever it is released. As a result, 343 Industries plans to expand the game’s weaponry. It is still not clear what these weapons are, but there will be more.

The news comes from 343 Industries’ Head of Creative, Joseph Staten, who stated as much in an interview with Game Informer. Staten, unfortunately, did not elaborate on the subject. So far, we don’t know how many additional weapons will be added, when the first will be released, or whether they will be wholly new, resurrected from the series’ past, or a combination of both.

Several weapons from prior games are currently missing from the game, so adding these would be a nice place to start. However, Infinite brought entirely new weapons to the game, so there’s reason to expect 343 Industries will continue to add new features.

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is currently in beta for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, with a full release set for December 8 with the game’s campaign, which will be available on the same platforms.

    Here’s a breakdown so far:

  • Here’s how BOTS are ruining your chances of getting a Playstation 5 console

If you’ve been trying to get your hands on the PS5 console, let’s take a look at how BOTS can derail your plans. People have been raving about the console since it was announced in November 2020, but obtaining it appears to be a near-impossible task. Yes, the global pandemic has made matters even worse, thanks to chip shortages and organized efforts to obtain consoles in large quantities, but the aggravating situation continues to this day.

The bots are programmed in Python and simulate how a human would buy a console on the internet.

Programmers use their code to instruct the bot to open a variety of retail and analyze the website for terms like add to cart once it’s open. That button doesn’t appear if the product is unavailable. The page refreshes, and “Add to cart” appears as soon as the shop signals new stock has arrived.

The bot’s most recent iterations don’t look for keywords but listen for changes behind the scenes – the coding on the webpage changes when a merchant has stock. The bot now listens for these changes and promptly sends out alerts to platforms like Twitter and Discord.

People that utilize bots keep a vigilant eye on the bot’s health at all times. They’re active on social media, alerting hundreds of thousands of followers to any bot malfunctions.

It becomes much easier to rig the system when someone can create bots in a matter of hours. Scalpers use a variety of techniques to modify bot code to automatically check out, allowing them to purchase consoles in large quantities at unbeatable speeds.

Some scalping groups boast about obtaining highly sought-after consoles before they are even listed on the company’s website.

Next time when you get frustrated with your purchase, remember that these bots are always one step ahead of you.

At least one person has a strategy to beat the bots:

  • Rockstar takes this one on the chin, apologizes for disastrous release of GTA Trilogy

The new release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has gotten quite a few complaints and Rockstar Games has apologized for the mess they made.

GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas were remastered to provide fans of the series a means to relive memories of the older games with improved visuals. Many gamers reported a growing list of issues, earning the Trilogy dismal Metacritic user rating. Some fans requested refunds as well.

Rockstar apologized for the way the game turned out in a statement posted on Friday.

The publisher stated that the updated versions of these iconic games did not debut in a state that satisfies the company’s own standards of quality, or the standards their fans have grown to expect.

Rockstar also announced that customers who bought the PC remaster would be able to download the classic versions of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas for free via the Rockstar Store, as they had previously been removed.

One of the most common frustrations among players is the perplexing visual alterations. It’s assumed that AI software was utilized to create better-looking graphics, and while it did improve some visuals, it also resulted in some odd-looking characters.

The game’s visuals aren’t the only ones with glitches. There are holes in the ground where players and vehicles can get caught, non-playable people interrupting cut-scenes, and weird collision dynamics in all three games. There’s also a disorienting rain effect that makes it difficult to view the game itself.

Rockstar is just wasting people’s time with this release and should be focused on the next new GTA.

  • Halo Infinite Campaign co-op and Forge face delays until NEXT YEAR

Halo Infinite’s first previews are looking awesome, but unfortunately, the co-op campaign and Forge mode won’t be in the game when it arrives on December 8th as previously expected.  343 Industries revealed that players will have to wait until at least May 2022 to jump into the co-op campaign with a friend.

Joseph Staten, the studio’s head of creative, confirmed that means campaign co-op won’t arrive until May at the earliest, and Forge is still set to launch with season 3 but will arrive even later.

“So our goal still remains what I said before, which is to ship campaign co-op with Season 2 and Forge with Season 3. But those remain goals. Those remain targets. And we can’t commit to any hard dates right now, because as we’re seeing with this multiplayer beta, other things might move up in the priority stack for us. If it turns out that our progression system just isn’t working the way that we intended, if we need to move some of these bigger rocks that I talked about sooner then we as a team will make those decisions and will clearly communicate to our fans why we’re doing certain things.” said Staten.

The development team wants to take the extra time to make sure it’s stable and works well, so 343 Industries’ decision to focus on the campaign and multiplayer might have been the right one even if this news possibly comes as a little disappointment to fans.

But 343 Industries surprise launched the free-to-play multiplayer component three weeks early on Monday, and it is already a hit as, even before you include players playing on console, through the PC Xbox app and on cloud gaming, the mode quickly hit an amazing 272,000 concurrent players on Steam.

  • Xbox Series X review: Hands On Impressions

Right after Thanksgiving I was lucky enough to snag an Xbox Series X from Best Buy’s website. I was a fan of the original Xbox, and though I owned an Xbox 360 I wasn’t particularly fond of the system itself. The Xbox One and PS4 were a solid tie for me in the last console  generation, and I genuinely think that the One is a fantastic console. That probably has colored my perceptions of the Series X, a console that feels more like a serious upgrade to the One at times rather than something completely novel. After having spent a lot of time playing the Series X, it’s worth noting that I love this console. Let me run through some of what makes it a great choice for next-gen gamers.

    Ease of Use:

The Series X is incredibly easy to set up. Using the Xbox app on my S9+ I was able to have the system completely set up in around 5 minutes, which included syncing data and settings from my Xbox One. Controller set up is incredibly easy as well. The controller can be synced to the system with the press of two buttons, one on the console itself, and the other on the controller. This also works with Xbox One controllers, that sync and work perfectly with the X.

    Controller:

The Series X controller is not particularly different than the One controller. Instead of a smooth finish it has a textured feel that helps maintain grip slightly better than the One controller. The new D-pad looks a bit different, but works well. I was able to platform efficiently on Crash Bandicoot: N Sane Trilogy using only the D-pad. In other words, this controller feels a lot like more of the same but with light tweaks that are immediately noticeable, which isn’t a bad thing.

    Graphics:

Games look fantastic on the Series X, especially the games that have been enhanced on Series X. I have two LG 4k TVs. Both are the same model. Playing games like Gears of War 5 on the Series X as compared to the One demonstrates that there is a difference in graphics, though to my untrained eye I can’t always pick out exactly why the Series X looks better. Bottom line, games look amazing, the colors are rich and vibrant, and there are virtually no framerate drops that would alter the presentation of the games on the Series X.

    Load Times:

I started timing load screens on the Series X, just to see how long I’d have to wait to get in game. My average from hitting the start button to being in-game was usually around 10 seconds. After a while, I became so accustomed to the immediacy of getting in the game quickly that I forgot it was happening. After going back to play other games on the last-gen consoles it hit me just what a difference in speed I was seeing between the Series X and its predecessors.

    Interface:

If you like the newest iteration of the One’s interface, then you’ll love the Series X interface. They are, to the best of my knowledge, indiscernible from one another. I particularly like that the games I tagged to my home screen carry over to the Series X, meaning that I can get those quick games of Luxor 2 in without having to dig through my back library.

    Games:

One of the biggest criticisms that can be leveled at the Series X is that there are no real exclusives for it. Everything that is on the Series X can be played either on PC or Xbox One. I will buy a PS5 eventually just to get the exclusives, but if you’re hunting for exclusives for the Series X there just aren’t any to be had. That hurts the selling point considerably.

That said, there is a vast library of games available on the Series X. It includes not only enhanced versions of some One games, but also the complete One catalog, a massive catalog of compatible 360 games, and the same handful of original Xbox games that are playable on the One. Gamepass Ultimate also offers a tremendous amount of content for a very reasonable price, making the Series X a great platform to play not only your back library, but also the entire Gamepass library. Between my library and Gamepass I think this is the first console generation where I started out with a massive slate of playable games on day one, even if that slate relies too heavily on games from the previous generations.

    Storage:

The Series X comes with a standard 1tb of storage. I was able to download 34 games with room to spare, but one or two more big titles would have filled internal storage. The system does have a slot in the back for proprietary storage drives, which can expand storage by 2 to 8tb (arguably) affordably.

Additionally, your older external hard drives that were compatible with the One can be used on the Series X, albeit with slower performance. These are plug and play, meaning that using them is incredibly easy.

    Verdict:

If you have an Xbox One there’s no pressing reason to upgrade right now, but upgrading brings lots of little perks that help make the Series X the best platform for playing Xbox games from any generation. It’s a powerful machine with a slick interface, quality controller, and great starting library of older games to keep you busy while you wait for the next enhanced release. If you’re on the market for an Xbox, you can’t go wrong with the Series X, just don’t expect something groundbreakingly different than the One.

  • Greedfall: The Best Bad Game I’ve Ever Played

Greedfall recently popped up on Playstation’s PS Now service, and it got me thinking about the game, which I finished on the Xbox One early this year during the initial COVID lockdowns.

When I drop money on a game, I fully expect certain things. I want smooth controls, an intuitive interface, slick graphics, and compelling voice acting. Greedfall, a 2019 RPG from the folks at Spiders, doesn’t have any of that. It looks and plays a lot like a last gen game, which would be completely forgivable on last gen hardware.

On the Xbox One or PS4 the game will likely come across as underwhelming to virtually anyone that’s spent time with a AAA RPG in recent gaming years.

What Greedfall does have, however, is story and atmosphere. In this realm the game is nearly unmatched. Greedfall engages in superb story telling and allows players to make choices throughout the game, many of which are as innocuous as simply choosing moderately passive aggressive dialogue responses, but end up having very serious consequences in regard to which characters and factions remain allies by the end of the game. Choosing dialogue is fairly similar to the Dragon Age franchise, which the team at Spiders obviously had in mind when designing this game.

Whereas side quests in many games feel like segues that distract from the main story (see the many memes about completing side quests before the main story), Greedfall takes a different approach. Completely optional side quests yield important information about the nature of the characters and their relationships, and sometimes also impact the feelings the characters have for one another. This makes the side quests feel less of an option than they are in many games, and instead gives the player a real incentive to delve into the world.

The game takes heavy influence from 17th and 18th century European history, not just in terms of the design of its mythical island of Teer Fradee, but in terms of the nature of colonialism and the need for Europeans from that era to murder and steal everything that isn’t tied down.

One of the cooler aspects of the game is that you get to choose whether or not you join in on the destruction of the Native peoples of Teer Fradee, or if you’ll be a friend to the islanders.

Bosses are very well designed, and only moderately frustrating thanks to the sometimes not great controls. Most of them look like something that walked out of a Lovecraft story to terrorize the player. Unfortunately, most enemies are the exact same regardless of where you are in the game. At the beginning? You’re going to kill weird bear looking things.

At the end? Bear things. The number of bear monsters, bat things, and average humans you’ll kill during your playthrough is roughly equivalent to the number of Hot Pockets consumed by your average Comicon attendee throughout a calendar year. In other words, be ready for a lot of repetition.

Despite all this, the politics, dialogue, and story in Greedfall make it a truly memorable experience if you can get past the many, many flaws.

It turned out being one of my favorite games from this console generation. Just try to pretend that they really wanted this game to look and play a lot like Dragon Age 2 from 2011 and maybe you can see past the more disappointing elements and enjoy it as much as I did.

  • Analogue Mega SG Lets Us Relive the 16-bit Era

A couple months ago I decided that I wanted to re-experience some of the games that helped define my childhood. Specifically, I wanted to explore the Sega Genesis library and revisit games that were attached to some really fond memories.

The Genesis was in my sister’s room, while I had the SNES and NES hooked up in mine. As a result I didn’t get to play it as much as I wanted, as my sister wasn’t too keen on me being in her room, especially since I had a tendency to hang her Barbie dolls from the ceiling fan and engage in other such sibling nonsense.

For me, the Genesis experience was mostly confined to a bunch of sweaty preteen guys jammed in a hot bedroom during the summer break, staying up literally all night taking turns playing games like Sonic the Hedgehog or Mortal Kombat.

I’ve lost touch with some of those friends and family over the years, and some are no longer living, but those memories have stayed with me. I found my old Sega Genesis equipment, but sadly most of the games had been lost, and I wasn’t too enthusiastic about trying to hook it up to our newer TVs, so I opted to splurge on an Analogue Mega SG (Retail Price $189.99). The Mega SG plays Sega Genesis cartridges, and is capable of playing Master System and Game Gear games as well.

The Mega SG hooks to the TV with HDMI and miraculously maintains the sound and picture of the older games as faithfully as one can without hooking the old system to an old TV. I just want to reiterate here, this thing makes the games look and sound absolutely fantastic on modern televisions. Couple that with a wireless controller (sold separately), and you have a sleek, functional system capable of playing all of your old favorites as they were mean to be played without the issues with sound and color associated with some emulators.

Now, I know that there have been various Sega Genesis collections over the years, as well as the Genesis mini, and many of the games that the Genesis is remembered for are available for next to nothing on PC, so why drop a couple hundred bucks on a system like this? For me the answer was pretty simple. Ease of use and hook up was one consideration, but the main reason has to do with the availability of games. The collections I mentioned earlier are virtually all first party titles, with a few extras thrown in there.

A lot of games that I really loved growing up were licensed titles that are unlikely to ever be made available again outside of emulators, and I’ve never been overly enthusiastic about emulators. The games that I wanted to play included some of the more ubiquitous titles like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Vectorman, but also titles like Taz in Escape From Mars, Batman Forever, and Jurassic Park, each of which were really important games for me as a kid

As it turns out, there’s a whole library of games like those out there sporting characters from Disney, Looney Tunes, and various movie franchises that we are never going to see re-released. I can guarantee that each of them was someone’s favorite game, and the Mega SG gives us the ability to replay them in all their glory, or to explore games that we never got around to playing because Santa didn’t pay enough attention to what we had circled in the Sears catalog all those years ago.

Are these the best games out there for the Genesis? Not necessarily. But that’s the fun in nostalgia. Sometimes I pick up a game like Batman Forever after a couple decades and realize that it just doesn’t hold up well at all, despite how much I might have loved it as a kid. Other games, like Taz in Escape From Mars actually hold up really well, and has been a great introduction to the world of 16-bit platformers for my own children.

My oldest daughter is 9. Her favorite games are Super Lucky’s Tale (first game she ever beat!) and Animal Crossing. She was incredulous about the fact that when she used up her lives she was taken to a continue screen and the beginning of the level. But then she hit continue, and kept on trying to make progress in a game that I never quite finished, and that alone was worth the price of the only gaming system I keep hooked up to the main TV in the house for my family to play.

  • Watch this video before you play Beyond Light on Destiny 2

Are you just now getting back into Destiny 2 after ditching it because you got sick of grinding for the same weapons and couldn’t find anyone to raid with. Oh, that’s just me. Never mind. Either way, here’s a Beyond Light video from Destiny that we all need to watch before we dive nose first into the ice galaxy and stasis.

Come on, Guardian, your light depends on it! Better get blessed by the Traveler on the way, too. We’ll be wielding some icicles in this one, so hopefully you’re prepared. Annnnnnd hopefully Crucible isn’t completely broken with people sliding all over on ice.

“None of us will ever escape the endless cycle of war between Light and Dark unless we look for truth beyond the tale.”

And as usual, Paul Tassi was on this before we were, and the dark music behind it is probably my favorite.

They have just debuted a new quasi-animated video that gives the “basics” of the set-up for the story of Beyond Light, focused mainly on the Traveler and the Darkness, the Fallen and us as Guardians. It’s pretty barebones, and it’s not going into anything else on Europa like Clovis Bray and the exo and all that, but it’s worth watching as a two-minute refresher all the same if you’re not super familiar with what’s been going on in Destiny, but want to jump into this expansion.

  • I am really good in Crucible, but totally trash in Trials

Anyone else deal with this? You’re a beast getting 20-30+ kills and 2.0+ in Crucible, but as soon as Trials of Osiris comes around, you feel like the bottom smurf on a bad team playing control.

Why do I constantly do well at crucible, then literally have people knock on my door and hand my ass to me in Trials? I don’t get it. I run as a team, we call things out, and we work as a team, strategize, and do everything we can. We typically get to three and four wins, but that fifth win hasn’t graced my screen since the original Destiny where I went flawless a whole ONE time and wrapped it up with clutch kills as a Golden Gun.

Nowadays we get to that fourth win and play two or three straight teams of “sweaty” players who seriously cannot be this good that they literally never miss a shot. I am not going to accept this is possible. I been gaming way too long, and have lost many good battles, won a lot too – but this is ridiculous.

Most people would probably GIT GUD and normally, that’s the case. But if you’re half decent and always do well, then something ain’t right.

I know what it is now.

    Y’all be cheating.

There is no way this is possible every single time when we have three good players who communicating and working together. It’s just too obvious at this point there is either a major skills gap and we probably do suck, but I’m not ruling out the possibility that some of these so-called “sweats” are probably using some sort of cheat to make these shots, because it honestly feels like they never miss and we get wiped out 0-5 in like ten minutes. I may as well be part of a four way T-Bag every Friday through Sunday, because that’s literally what it feels like when we’re just about to get win 5 – but of course, never do.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Tune in next week for my next edition of HOW TO BE AWFUL TRIALS!

  • Xbox Series X and PS5 available on Black Friday without being trampled

Thinking about getting a next generation gaming console like the latest Xbox or Playstation 5 and didn’t get a preorder in? Well, we have news for you! You can now go to Best Buy on Black Friday and try to get one. Even better, you won’t have to stand in line all night and risk being trampled when the doors open, despite how much fun that sounds.

Because you know, nothing says dedication like getting a black eye running to the gaming section and having someone toss you a new Xbox and up-selling an overpriced HDMI cord like they always do at Best Buy.

But the good news is this – it’s an online event that will help you get your hands on the new Xbox Series X or Playstation 5, so you still have a chance to get one, if you really, really, really, want it.

    GameRant reported

It’s very important to note that these consoles will not be available in-store. This is presumably to stem the spread of COVID-19 by avoiding large gatherings. This is not to imply that Best Buy stores will be closed to gamers altogether. Best Buy stores will be open on Black Friday, November 27th, starting at 5 AM local time, with all sorts of game deals available. Plus, a few weeks earlier, in-person console pick-up appointments will be available for those who pre-ordered a next-gen console.

The online-only nature of the restocked consoles will likely not thrill those who failed to get a console during the pre-order process. Although there have been a few opportunities to claim a new console in the weeks after pre-orders launched, they are few and far between. Given the huge number of gamers waiting to get a new console, any new opportunities present huge bottlenecks, and demand will surely far exceed supply. Best Buy’s website may crash from the demand, leaving many frustrated once again.

They can count me out for getting a next gen system. At this time I don’t see any reason to get a new Xbox or Playstation. It seems like the biggest selling point this time around is simply the graphics and the dick measuring everyone’s doing to see who has the most powerful system.

Doesn’t anyone remember that we played Halo on levels that consisted of mostly gray walls like on Hang’em High, or a little bit of grass like on Blood Gulch – and we played these games with basic-Betty graphics for HOURS upon HOURS?

And does everyone forget that graphics now are simply amazing and 1,00,000xs better than they were 20 years ago?

We obviously don’t need graphics to be improved and companies like 343 better start paying attention to this. They took Halo and ruined it years ago, but hey – they got great graphics, so that’s all that matters, right? Nope. Halo 4 and Halo 5 are unplayable with bad maps and lousy weapons, so maybe game developers can focus on making better games with good graphics instead of bad games with amazing graphics.

I’ll grab a new Xbox Series X when there’s a good reason to upgrade, but right now – there simply isn’t.

And for those who disagree, go pay $500 and get a new monitor or TV while you’re at it. Let me know how your experience is any different, because I guarantee – it won’t be.

Also, the PS5 is ugly and way too big. I would need another bookshelf just to put it on. I don’t want that thing in my house unless it doubles as a satellite dish for NASA and aliens show up to probe my neighbor.

  • Fans want a Cayde-6 tribute, but does Bungie even care?

Bungie killed Cayde-6 back in 2018 and left us with a coupon for ramen. As we get closer to the release of Beyond Light, we learn that his ramen coupon will be gone, ghost, goodbye. It’s like they’re literally killing Cayde-6 again. And let’s not forget, he was the only character who was actually kinda cool.

The rest are sometimes a bit forgettable when you’re hitting the same cookie cutter events and grinding the same strikes for mediocre rewards.

Fans now want a permanent tribute to the witty character as part of a way to keep Cayde-6’s spirit alive. However, Bungie hasn’t hinted at any sort of tribute that would last any longer than the expiring ramen coupon.

So we need to ask – does Bungie care at all about Cayde-6? What about the fans? You know, the reason Bungie still has money to develop this game. The players who grind out for everything, rush to beat a raid, spend all this time and money on the game and they take our Cayde away.

Bungie is just some stone cold heart breakers, aren’t they?

  • Bungie and Microsoft team up for Destiny 2 on Game Pass

Bungie and Microsoft partner up and delivers Destiny 2 to Xbox Game Pass this September. Xbox Game Pass subscribers won’t have any troubles as the game will have no additional cost. Not only will players be able to access previous expansions, but they’d also get Destiny 2: Beyond Light DLC.

The standard editions of Destiny 2 DLC will be available. However, Destiny 2’s season pass will be sold separately. Microsoft commented that the launch of Destiny 2 into the Game Pass would be limited to the console version of the subscription. They are currently working on it and are planning to launch this with a PC subscription in late 2021.

Destiny 2’s Beyond Light expansion was originally scheduled to launch on September 22. However, Bungie delayed the expansion and moved the date to November 10. Bungie said that they experienced difficulties in the development due to the pandemic.

Destiny 2’s Beyond light introduces a new element called “stasis” to its players. Statis is connected to time manipulation. The major expansion focuses on Europa, Jupiter’s icy moon.

AztecCross showed a screenshot of the message. Game Pass subscribers will have access to the standard edition, with Forsaken and Shadowkeep, which will be available in September 2020. They will also release a version of Destiny 2 for Xbox Series X that includes 4K resolution with 60 frames per second. Those who own Destiny 2 on their Xbox one can migrate the game to their Xbox Series X via Smart Delivery. Subscribers also can stream Destiny 2 on their Android mobile devices via Cloud.

In the trailer for Beyond Light, released hours ago, Bungie showed the stasis freeze effect. The trailer features a hunter who built an icy wall and froze enemies that were near it. New subclasses will be introduced in the PvP environment.

  • Destiny 2 Beaver problem might finally be fixed

Players have been dealing with sudden disconnections after Destiny 2 Windows PC version left Battlenet. After they came to Steam with Shadowkeep last fall, the errors disrupt all activities. Recently, Bungie partnered up with Valve to fix the errors codenamed “Beaver.”

Polygon reports that on July 16, the studio was able to identify the leading causes of Beaver errors on PC. The actions they took to fix the issue only “appear to have reduced the errors significantly,” but not all. Bungie tweeted, “UPDATE: On July 16, we identified a source of most of the BEAVER errors appearing on PC and mitigations appear to have reduced errors significantly since then. We’re still investigating the root cause of the issue. Players in central and eastern states were impacted most.”

On their weekly blog post this Thursday, Bungie gave additional information on the causes of “Beaver.”

This past week Valve identified hardware configuration issues with 4 relays in their Chicago, Virginia, Stockholm, and Dubai data centers. In each case, the affected relay was unable to send traffic to one other relay in the same data center. If a connection to a peer went through both of those relays, then it would drop. Valve has fixed the configuration issues, and we have confirmed that the rate of disconnections in the affected areas has been reduced significantly.

Bungie teamed up with Valve to solve the issues on four datacenters. Players will still encounter “Beaver” errors if they disconnect for reasons such as internet outages. Players with fully functional internet connections will only encounter “Beaver” errors on times on in-game maintenance when players will experience disruption.

The “Beaver” errors were first encountered in October 2019. Bungie launched Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and then moved Destiny 2 from Battle.net to Steam. “Beaver” issues appeared frequently and kept players from loading into Tower or connect to friends. Some players were even ejected in the middle of endgame activities such as Raids or Dungeons.

Players are still to report if they’ve encountered a “Beaver” error in their game.

  • Dragon’s Shadow Exotic Chest Armor for Hunters 2.0

Dragon’s Shadow is making the rounds as it became the go-to for both PvP and PvE.

On the Bungie webpage, there’s a list of armor perks.

    • Wraithmetal Mail – Dodging reloads all weapons and increases both movement and weapon handling speeds for a brief time.
    • Plasteel Reinforcement Mod – Increased resilience.
    • Unflinching Submachine Gun Aim – Reduces flinching from incoming fire while aiming Submachine guns.
    • Primary Ammo Finder – Increases the drop chance of Primary ammo on kill.

Mtashed‘s video disproves the bland description for Wraithmetal Mail. ShackNews broke it down, listing down its advantages.

    • 10-second duration
    • 50 Mobility
    • All weapons reloaded
    • Faster reloads
    • Quickdraw
    • Snapshot Sights

One of the reasons why Dragon’s Shadow should be appreciated is down to 50 Mobility. By using Dodge with the Dragon’s Shadow, Hunters with a 50 Mobility stat will automatically have 100. A hunter with 100 Mobility gets a 9-second cool-down, and Wraithmetal Mail lasts 10 seconds. Wraithmetal Mail is only one perk.

You will acquire the Dragon’s Shadow the same way as other normal Exotic loot. There’s no quest you have to take. You can purchase it from Xur if he’s selling it or if an exotic engram drops it. To buy Xur’s engram, you must have the bulk of Hunter’s Exotic Armor. Doing this will raise your chances of obtaining it.

  • Microsoft confirms Xbox One X is discontinued

Microsoft has now confirmed that the Xbox One X is officially discontinued. They are also discontinuing the Xbox One S All-Digital edition. With the Xbox Series X coming out near the end of this year, it makes sense to focus on their next generation system.

This all started with a rumor due to a post on Reddit that suggested the discontinuance. The post was titled “All Xbox One Consoles getting discontinued.” and stated “Something interesting I noticed today at my job. I work in electronics at target and I was checking to see if we were getting anymore Xbox one consoles in. I noticed every single Xbox console we normally carry was discontinued. Meaning essentially our store will no longer be carrying any Xbox one S or Xbox one X consoles. Doesn’t make much sense to stop selling consoles in July at a major retailer if the console is expected to release holiday 2020. Made me wonder if maybe a surprise early launch of the Series X is on the way”  – as discovered by Tech Radar.

“A more recent report by PressStart claims that sources at both EB Games and JB Hi-Fi told the Australian publication that they aren’t expecting any more stock of the Xbox One X, with the console being deleted from their systems, and instead offering the Xbox One S and upcoming Xbox Series X.”

CNET also reported on the discontinued Xbox One X, citing an emailed statement from Microsoft spokesperson to confirm the information. It stated that “Xbox One S will continue to be manufactured and sold globally.”

It’s worth noting that searches on Microsoft and Amazon might display limited supplies of the Xbox One X, but at this point, it’s not really worth it to buy an older console with Xbox Series X on the horizon.

  • Destiny 2 Players beat Prophecy Dungeon In 8 Minutes

Three Destiny 2 players ransacked the mini-raid Dungeon in an astounding eight-minute speedrun.

Destiny 2’s dungeon Prophecy is filled with skyboxes and fun puzzles. The Prophecy is the latest addition after Season of Arrivals launched in June. Season of Arrivals launched in June. Players’ characters must descend to the cave, delving into the mysteries that surround the Darkness. They must navigate through the maze located in the Ascendent Realm.

The Prophecy is by far Destiny 2’s supreme realm, where anything can happen. As Kotaku words it, you can sweep celestial expanses while riding on a sparrow motorbike. Some puzzles can only be solved by killing enemies, and it must be on a specific area of light or shadow to open a new path. Prophecy also contains lore that will pique any hardcore fans’ interest.

Destiny players AceyBaby, Granger, and BjarturFO were featured in articles after flashing through Prophecy in 8 minutes and 4 seconds. The article reported that the players used high mobility builds and swords. Their method made the first-person shooter made the game look like it belongs to an arcade. These players used time-saving tricks, killing enemies quickly to have their enemies in specific combat encounters to spawn early.

While the game comes down to practice and skill, extended sections of sparrow flying are vital in Prophecy. It was explained as spawning the sparrow mid-air then using side-boosts as you start to fall in order to spin the vehicle upward. When you’ve used up all of your boosts, use the sparrow as a platform to jump. Immediately summon a new one once your character begins to fall.

AceyBaby, Granger, and BjarturFO’s run remains the fastest. There’s no doubt that someone will beat that record after the video showed missed opportunities in saving time. The players did a messy fight against one boss. Thus, a more polished attempt will inevitably beat their run.

  • Watch Dogs Legion 20 Minute Gameplay

Ready for some sweet London accents? Well here’s 20 minutes of Watch Dogs Legion gameplay. No commentary, just the game and Bagley chipping away at us with a few F bombs and a handful of bollocks throughout. This walkthrough gameplay video was titled at 4K PC Ultra. Streaming this at 2160p looked fairly insane and overly pleasant to look at from a graphics perspective.

About two thirds of the way through the trailer, you’re flying on a drone and causing a large truck to drive into someone and the wall. Almost reminded me of playing GTAV and all the times you take the vehicles for a little sidewalk action. I’m not sure there’s any honking at the ladies and pulling them into an alley while listening to some 80’s music like in Vice City… or is there?

Later in the Watch Dogs Legion gameplay video is a character named Harry who seriously reminds me of Jason Statham’s voice, but after looking around Google – I couldn’t find anything to verify it was him or not. It sounds like him quite a bit, but I do think Statham’s voice is a bit deeper. Harry’s voice actor sure has the accent down though.

Legions takes place in London and you’re part of a “resistance” taking back the city to give to the people. Sort of sounds like some of the protests and actions we see in real life, but clearly not as high tech.

The Ubisoft website highlights this as one of the selling points:

“Play as Anyone. Make Your Resistance Your Own. Where will you find your army? How about everywhere? Every Londoner has a reason to fight back. Play as literally any character – a bartender, an ex-spy, a graffiti artist, a fallen boxer, a well-connected lawyer, a stark raving mad grandma, anyone.”

Anyone? Hmmmm… that could be fun.

Watch Dogs Legion release date is October 29, 2020 as shown on Ubisoft’s page for the game.
